THE SMART WAY TO CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN

Cleaning up the kitchen is part of cooking. Not only is it easier to cook and bake in a clean kitchen, but clean surfaces and storage containers will keep your family healthier and safer. See Food Safety for more storage and cleaning tips. Take some time to learn these easy tips and preventative measures and before you know it your kitchen will be automatically cleaner and less cluttered. THE SMART WAY TO CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN

  1. Gather all supplies together before you begin:
  • Trash container
  • Basket for stuff that does not belong in the kitchen
  • Dish soap
  • Other cleansers you normally use
  • Dishrag or sponge
  • Scrubber for stuck on food
  • Broom, mop or vacuum
  • Housekeeping gloves
  1. Start with an empty dishwasher and an empty sink.

This is such a simple, but smart suggestion. Make sure your dishwasher and your sink are empty before you start cooking; this way, you can rinse and load messy tools and dishes right away instead of leaving them to sit out for a few hours (or overnight, or days!).

  1. Clean top to bottom

If you want to clean your kitchen fast, follow the old rule of top to bottom and front to back. It saves time so you are not doubling up on the work. If you clean the counter before you clean the top of the stove hood, you will have to clean the counter again as debris falls below.

  1. Empty the refrigerator

Tossing anything that has expired. Throw dirty food-storage containers into the sink to soak. Working from top to bottom, wipe down the shelves with a paper towel or a rag spritzed with a nontoxic all-purpose cleaner.

  1. Wash down your countertop, appliances, and sink.

Rinse out sponges and rags. This is not heavy duty cleaning. Wash down the visible surfaces. Don’t open the microwave and scrub it out or clean the crumbs out of the toaster. Quickly wipe it down.

  1. Clean the upper and lower cabinets and anything else on the walls, including a mounted microwave.

Spray the microwave interior with all-purpose cleaner and let sit for two minutes. With a damp, soapy cloth, wipe down the exterior. (If it’s stainless steel, use a cloth moistened with diluted white vinegar, instead of soapy water, to clean any fingerprints.) Next, wipe the doors and the pulls of the upper cabinets and anything else (frames, hooks, vent grates) you encounter as you circle the room. With a fresh damp, soapy cloth, wipe down the backsplash if you have one.

  1. Take out the trash

If the trash is full, or tomorrow is trash day, take the trash outside and reline the trash container so that it is ready for collection.

  1. Sweep and mop, or vacuum.

Failure to clean your kitchen may result in the spread of bacteria and germs, which can cause you and other household members to become ill. Not only should you regularly wash counter tops, sweep your floors and clean the dishes, but you should also sanitize work areas and kitchen utensils that you use to prevent the spread of bacteria.
